29 October, 2016

Bonn, Germany

The City of Bonn celebrated the coming into force of the UN Charter of 1945 in the market square of Bonn. This year’s festivities focused on the Sustainable Development Goals, adopted last year by the United Nations in New York. As every year, UNESCO-UNEVOC joined other UN, international and national organizations based in Bonn to celebrate the occasion.

This year’s theme raised awareness among the public of the 17 Sustainable Development Goals and their targets. It was an opportunity for the different UN organizations to showcase their work and to explain how they contribute to the attainment of the goals. Together with the UNESCO Institute for Lifelong Learning (UIL) in Hamburg, staff from UNESCO-UNEVOC ran a booth that provided information on the International Centre’s work in topics that included greening technical and vocational education and training (TVET), gender equality and equity, and ICT in TVET.

As inprevious years, the booth attracted a large number of people. Mr Shyamal Majumdar, Head of UNESCO-UNEVOC, received the Lord Mayor of Bonn, Mr Ashok Sridharan, as well as the Minister for Federal Affairs in North Rhine-Westfalia, Mr Franz-Josef Lersch-Mense.

To find out more about the Sustainable Development Goals, and in particular SDG 4 on Education, please visit the dedicated portal explaining the goals.

Speed-dating for sustainability

On the 28th of October, the Museum of German History (“Haus der Geschichte”) organized a discussion on the 17 Sustainable Development Goals and the role that the different UN organizations play in attaining them. Reminiscent of a speed-dating session, each Head of Agency was had three minutes to introduce their organisation and its activities to the public.

Mr Shyamal Majumdar represented UNESCO-UNEVOC, whose presentation emphasized the need to empower those on the ground. He explained how the International Centre’s activities contribute to local capacity building and provided concrete examples, such as the recently successfully concluded UNEVOC TVET Leadership Programme, which sought to empower TVET leaders to transform TVET in their institutions and in their countries to contribute to the SDGs.
